We had learned that saints divided the entire Zodiac (360 degrees) into 12 equal parts of each 30 degrees... and that saints considered the Earth as the center of the entire Universe...
We also learned that saints were able to see and feel, 7 planets with their psychic abilities of "Divya Drishti" and "Divya Sparsha"...
Saints observed some periodical events on Earth...
Day and Nights, periodical seasons, water cycle, increase and decrease in sizes of the waves in the sea... extra... In fact we can also watch them and naturally we will ask ourselves why they are happening in a cyclic way... Saints concluded that these events are directly related with planetary motions and their revolutions...
They understand that seasons are the result of Earth revolving around the Sun, and Day and Nights are due to Earth revolving around its own axis and they also noticed that size of the Moon is the cause for the cyclic rise and fall of the waves in sea...
They wanted to build a Calendar or Panchang based on these planetary motions knowledge so that they can record the "TIME" of different major historical events and royal births...
